What it Takes to Qualify
To promote safety and compliance, Classic Transport requires the following for candidates to become a Towaway Driver.
- You must be at least 23 years old
- You must hold a valid driver’s license
- At least 18 months of driving experience is required
- No more than two citations, two accidents, or a license suspension during the last three years.
- You must not have had any major violations in the past seven years
All applicants must also provide proper documents that establish identity and nationality. These must comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) rules. This means you must present a U.S. passport, passport card, or enhanced driver’s license.
Qualified drivers must pass a DOT physical or have passed in the previous 12 months. A clean drug test during orientation is also required. You will also be expected to complete a road test if you do not have a CDL license.
Standard Qualifications for Your Equipment
To ensure the safety of drivers and the products you haul, your vehicle must meet certain requirements. The basics are below
- Class IV or higher hitch/receiver
- 2 5/16 inch & 2 inch required ball sizes with a solid shank
- Mirrors for towing 102-inch-wide trailers
- Mud flaps must cover both rear tires completely
- Mud flaps should have no more than 4 inches of ground clearance when fully loaded
- Optional accessory fuel tanks or toolboxes must meet Department of Transportation guidelines. These cannot extend above bed rails
- Trailer brake control
- Truck registration at 20,000 to 26,000 pounds
- 12-volt battery
- Annual DOT truck inspection within 90 days of starting orientation
- No window tint on the driver and passenger front windows
Safety Items Required
Safety is the primary goal. Hence, the company expects all drivers to carry the following on every trip.
- Mounted fire extinguisher
- Flares/triangles (set of three)
- Tire gauge
- Lug wrench/jack/torque wrench
- Spare fuses for your vehicle
- Basic small hand tools
- Padlock or securing the trailer or load
